This is the poster I made for my 3D project assignment that fetures stills from the animation and the enviroment.
Created in 3D studio max 9
This was my first time useing 3DS max to do anything other than mess with FFXI models to render them in HQ, so a lot of trial and error went into this damn thing along with hundreads of hours.
I just didn't 'get' 3DSMax until I finished uni, I got bored with it too easily at uni :S
I find when using the ink 'n' paint material that it's best to have the line colour at a dark brown, almost black - but not actually black. It softens the line nicely and actually gives you a better cell shaded look Also, instead of just using the material to colour the whole thing, you can get better effects by combining the material with some photoshop-made textures, you've got more control that way you can still get the shadows that way as well - so more detail can be painted on without relying on poly count too much
(saying that, poly count only really matters with DS, PSP and Wii titles these days :S)
But back to the point - this looks really good And it sh*ts all over my second year 3D and animation work (most of which didn't really get handed in because I was so ashamed of it :S)
Now, Bite the bullet and post a front, side and 3/4 view of the wire frame so I can ooh and aah at that (and maybe pass on some handy tips and tricks )
Keep this up and you'll be a damn fine 3D Modeller which'll grab you the good jobs in the games industry
I don;t even know what this ink n' paint thing of witch you speak is lol. This project was probably weighted alot less tha your ones as I'm just on a general media course, my final peice is a good 50x better than 40% pass mark (i saw a good few flying bricks in my class)
really? How else did you get the cell shaded effect?
Check out using materials and shaders - its what gives a model the 'wow' factor. It's easy enough to pick up - I think theres a tutorial for them in the Max Tutorial files (which is all we did to learn Max ) Once you've got the basics, Go enlist on CGtalk.com and theres SO MANY awesome professionals there who'll give you help if you ask for critique - just explain you've only been using Max for a short while and would love a bit of advice and tips on how to use materials and shaders and all that - people will be happy to help if you put in the effort
I honestly think you've got a knack for 3D modeling - don't just do the required class work, really get into it! trust me it gets quicker and easier the more you do it - a DS character model from start to fully textured used to take me 3+ days, now I can do it in a few hours
and the flying bricks - heheh, I would have been one of those people back in the day
I made it by putting a falloff map on the diffuse (or a multitude of maps if i was useing a skin aswell so for the sail and hull) then just set it with the dark and light. I used a push to give the outlines aswell.
I'd much rather be able to do traditional art than 3D modeling. I have to create the entire world for 3D modeling, but it has to be tangable, it has to have form. Where as a picture is so much easier to peice together, you wat a ray of light *boom* oh that was hard.
Yep it's my 3D assignment for year 2 at uni. I'm still trying to upload the video but it's a but too detailed for things like youtube so I need to wait for some free time to convert it into flash =3

Always a victory if you ask me.
